Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) on Thursday ordered the authorities concerned to take steps for dope and vision tests of public transport drivers before issuing them with licenses.

The court asked the drivers of public buses to keep doors of the buses closed while the buses are on the move and opened when the buses are at stoppages for picking up the passengers.

The vehicles except ambulances and fire service transports cannot blow horn in the areas of schools, hospitals, residential and restricted areas, the court said.

The court also ordered to set up CCTV cameras at important places in the country.

The court directed the government to make Road Transport Act effective in six months to reduce reckless driving and road accidents in the country.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the orders while delivering the judgment on compensation for the family of deceased Government Titumir College student Rajib Hossain, who lost his hand after getting caught between two speeding buses on April 3. Rajib died from his injuries on April 17.

The court ordered the state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and the owners of Sajan Paribahan to each pay Tk25 lakh to the victim's family, amounting to total compensation of Tk50 lakh.
